Modu Food USA: Building a Smart Factory with Ultra-Low Temperature Spiral Freezers
“Overcoming the environmental limitations of the U.S. market, the Modu Food project successfully established a stable -60°C ultra-low temperature production system—demonstrating Korea Freezer’s ‘field-proven expertise’. We are committed to becoming your trusted partner in transforming large-scale production lines into efficient, stable, and high-performance operations.”
Sang-don Lee, CEO of Korea Freezer Co., Ltd.
Background & Challenges: Building a High-Capacity Production Systems for Global Markets
For food manufacturers entering global markets, high-volume production and continuous processing are key to success. Modu Food, the client in this project, sought a solution to maximize production efficiency in response to growing export demand. As it was a new project in the U.S., we faced two major challenges:
① Spatial Constraint: Limited installation space required securing sufficient freezing retention time to operate a high-capacity production line.
② Environmental Constraint: Due to the intense solar heat at the U.S. site, the outdoor units were exposed to extreme temperatures, raising concerns about equipment overheating and significant drops in cooling efficiency.
Solution: Strategic Implementation of the Spiral Freezer
More than just equipment, this system integrates high-performance technologies capable of stable operation even in extreme environments.
① -60°C Ultra-Low Temperature Integrated System: Optimized integration of high-efficiency cooling modules (heat exchangers) with the spiral unit ensures a stable ultra-low temperature environment.
② Smart Cooling ‘Mist Spray System’: Sprayers installed around outdoor units help lower ambient temperature, enabling stable operation without overheating even under intense solar exposure.
③ Space-Efficient Multi-layer Mesh Belt: A multi-tier structure secures a long freezing path within a compact footprint, enabling continuous high-capacity production.
④ Energy Efficiency (Air Curtain): Air curtains at inlet and outlet zones minimize cold air leakage and minimize energy loss.
⑤ Hygienic and Durable Structure: Stainless steel mesh belts and robust bracket structures ensure high standards of food safety and long-term durability.
Results & Impact: Achieving a Fully Realized Smart Factory
① Increased Production Capacity: Established a high-capacity, continuous production framework that ensures a stable supply to meet the surging demands of the global export market.
② Stable Operation: The mist system ensures reliable operation year-round, regardless of extreme U.S. heatwaves.
③ Quality Consistency and OPEX Efficiency: Ultra-low temperature freezing at -60°C preserves product quality, while air curtains reduce cold air loss and lower operating costs.
④ Enhanced Hygiene and Compliance: Full stainless steel construction and hygienic design ensure compliance with strict food safety standards.
